As mentioned in the ‘Business German’ and ‘Study for Fun’ sections, group tuition can be very beneficial as students can learn from one another by repeating answers, using different vocabulary or carrying out structured role plays. Practising conversation together gives confidence and is quite simply good fun, which always motivates!
How group tuition works
Teaching has to benefit everyone in the group – so less time can be spent on the individual during a lesson. Doing some homework is therefore quite essential if students want to make good progress, and particularly if they’d like to gain a qualification at the end of the course. But it’s also fun to share the reading out of homework essays and have the opportunity to learn good things from one another whilst avoiding making the same mistakes…
A group of students also means a wider range of interests, so talking skills can be practised with more variety, for example, from holiday experiences and family life to jobs held and political issues. Lessons can also be student-led, if, for example, they’d like to suggest new ideas for role plays or essays.
The abilities in a group have to be reasonably well matched, however, so that no student feels left behind or loses confidence.
